Acupuncture Can Improve Your Health and Lifestyle

Many people across the country avail themselves of the benefits of acupuncture. This therapeutic treatment is a part of traditional Chinese medicine. It often falls into the category of alternative or holistic medicine. Many acupuncturists use this remedy to help patients with nausea and pain associated with pregnancy and chemotherapy. Acupuncture is also used in conjunction with other medical procedures to help patients with conditions including:

headaches fibromyalgia tennis elbow arthritis

Acupuncture concerns itself with helping the natural energy of the body flow properly along pathways called meridians. This energy is called chi and is defined by five cardinal functions. The physical processes of the body require the steady flow of energy from vital organs to specific body tissues such as the skin, muscles, joints, and tendons. When the flow of this energy is hindered along these channels, or pathways, a blockage occurs. The buildup of energy can cause diminished health in the affected areas of the body.

To fix a blockage, it’s necessary to insert very thin needles into points on the skin. These points correspond to blockages of energy along meridians in the body. The number of pins and the depth of their insertion depend upon the medical condition. There are landmarks on the body to locate these points. Once a needle is inserted into a point, an acupuncturist will lightly tap on it until the needle is at a desired depth. Most treatments last for about fifteen minutes. The number of treatments will also be determined by the acupuncturist.

Before a procedure, an acupuncturist will ask a patient about his medical history. He will also ask the patient what medications he is on and what he is taking them for. It’s important for a patient to fully disclose all this information. After this, the patient will lie down on a table to begin the treatments. Sometimes, needles will be heated to enhance the treatments. Many acupuncturists work with health care professionals such as internists, rheumatologists, surgeons, and general practitioners to give a patient the best possible chance of improving his health and well-being.
